From ERP to security consultant

Within Enshore, we offer people the freedom to continue to develop themselves. Development sometimes involves changing the way someone does their work. This is how our colleague Rients came to the conclusion that the role of Security consultant suits him better than ERP consultant. How did he make the move and how did it go? He takes you through his story in this blog!

Traineeship ERP

I started the traineeship to ERP consultant at Enshore and got to know the company and the work this way. Here I quickly felt at home thanks to all the helpful colleagues. The traineeship was challenging and within a short time I was able to move smoothly within the wonderful world called Oracle EBS. Puzzling and solving problems gave me satisfaction and a kick.

Yet something was missing in my work: more customer contact and a more advisory role toward the customer. Jeroen, owner of Enshore, noticed that I connected easily with customers and found it easy to express ideas. During a walk, he asked if auditing wasn't for me. After a follow-up conversation with one of our IT auditors, Marcel Dusink, I knew for sure; I want to take this opportunity. That's when my dual path from ERP consultant to Security consultant started.

Dual

Now I had gotten what I had asked for, but how do you deal with two different jobs in one week? This was quite difficult to combine. In addition to breaking in on security, there was also my ERP work in the beginning. This was quite difficult to combine. I struggled the most with prioritization; if I was at the customer for security one day and was called to fix a production disruption, I had to decide at that moment which of the two had priority. Gradually, Enshore helped me transfer my ERP work. This eventually allowed me to throw myself into working full-time as a Security consultant!

Full-time security consultant

As a Security consultant, I have the opportunity to assist companies from the start with standards framework implementations, questions about AVG or privacy. Or simply to act as an oracle in the field of security. Through the motto "you ask, we advise" I do my job.

My work week is very varied. I organize my week myself on the basis of my client appointments. For example, I have a fixed appointment every Wednesday morning with client A and a fixed appointment every other Tuesday afternoon with client B. Other clients like this to be more flexible, so I plan these clients around this. I always prepare the client appointments in advance so that there is a plan of what I expect from the client and what the next step is after the appointment. This way I create clarity for the client and they know exactly where they stand.

What I like most about this position?

The amount of clients I can serve in a week provides a lot of variety and variety. I work with clients who have different corporate cultures, atmospheres and, of course, people. They all have a different vision as a company, but the same goal; to become safer.

It is a fun challenge to ensure mutual understanding so that cooperation can be established. In this way I can make companies more aware of the risks associated with information security in order to then make them more secure.

Projects I get the most energy from are initial implementations of a standards framework. With this you learn an awful lot about a company in a short time. How are processes set up? What are the existing policies? Where are the greatest opportunities for improvement? The most important things in these implementations for me as a security consultant, are to bring peace of mind by giving an overview. Make sure you have A in order then you also have x, y and z in order and you are well prepared for the audit. The combination of joint motivation towards one common goal forms this work for me as incredibly enjoyable and challenging.
